Bernard Berger est l’auteur néo-calédonien le plus connu de son île. Depuis 1983, il a publié une vingtaine de bandes dessinées de la « Brousse en folie » qui met à l’honneur les habitants de l’île. A l’occasion des 30 ans de sa première parution, Berger a partagé les sources de son inspiration, permettant de réaliser que ses histoires vont bien au-delà de l’humour et mettent en scène le destin commun qui lie les habitants du « Caillou ».
Bernard Berger is the most well known New Caledonian author on his island. Since 1983, he has published twenty or so ‘Brousse en folie’ (Madness of the Bush) comic strips featuring the inhabitants of the island. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his first edition, Berger shared the sources of his inspiration, revealing that his stories go well beyond humour and stage the shared fate connecting the inhabitants of the ‘Stone.’

Marlène Cummins, aborigène, est tombée amoureuse du leader du Parti des Black Panthers australien en 1972 et a combattu à ses côtés contre la discrimination raciale. Mais à la fin de leur relation, Marlène s’est enlisée dans un cycle d’addiction qui l’a conduite dans la rue et à l’extrême vulnérabilité. 40 ans plus tard, elle lutte toujours contre l’addiction et se rend à New York pour un rassemblement international du mouvement. Elle est prête à faire face à ses démons et à révéler des secrets.
The Aboriginal woman Marlène Cummins fell in love with the leader of the Australian Black Panther Party in 1972 and fought alongside him against racial discrimination. But at the end of their relationship, Marlène became caught in a cycle of addiction driving her to the streets and making her extremely vulnerable. 40 years later, she is still battling against addiction and travels to New York for an international gathering of the movement. She is ready to confront her demons and reveal secrets.

Il a disparu depuis 20 ans, laissant la marque d’un grand artiste polynésien, peintre et musicien, au cœur du renouveau culturel de la Polynésie.
When he arrived in French Polynesia, Bobby was a stranger; today he is a myth. The film recounts how this marginal character became an artistic or even cultural point of reference. He died 20 years ago, leaving behind the mark of a great Polynesian artist, painter and musician, at the heart of Polynesia’s cultural revival.

Tahiti, Septembre 1914. Le jour du 22 septembre, le vent de guerre s’est levé face à Papeete, capitale des Etablissements français d’Océanie. Deux cuirassés allemands bombardent le port et la ville. La première Guerre mondiale s’est invitée dans le Pacifique où une centaine d’hommes seulement défendent Tahiti face à l’ennemi arrivant par la mer. A la tête de la défense, le commandant Maxime Destremau organise la résistance qui permet d’empêcher le débarquement des Allemands.
Tahiti, September 1914. On 22nd September, war raised its ugly head in the face of Papeete, the capital of French Establishments in Oceania. Two German battleships bomb the port and the town. The First World War had reached the Pacific where there were only a hundred or so men to defend Tahiti against the enemy arriving by sea. Heading up the defence, the commanding officer Maxime Destremau organises the resistance preventing the Germans landing.

Hina, professeur, est une jeune femme hawaïenne trans-genre , ou « mahu » selon la tradition, incarnant à la fois l’esprit masculin et féminin. Le film raconte la transformation de Colin Wong, lycéen timide, devenu Hina, femme mariée et directrice culturelle d’une école à Honolulu. Ho’onari, petite fille à la forte personnalité, désire rejoindre la troupe masculine de Hula, Hina lui donne la possibilité d’exprimer sa part d’âme masculine. Elèves et professeurs préparent non sans difficulté un spectacle.
Hina is a kumu, or teacher, and a native Hawaiian mahu– one who embraces both masculine and feminine spirit. The film narrates her transformation from a shy secondary school boy to a married transgender woman and cultural director of a school in Honolulu. When Ho’onani, a young girl with a big personality, wishes to join the school's male hula group, Hina gives her the chance to express the masculine side of her soul. As teacher and students prepare for a show, they must overcome many difficulties to achieve their dreams.

A village boy becomes a man by catching a tuna in a revival of ancient tradition. Ernest will undergo a test of his manhood and the future of a community in The Test: Chronicle of an Initiation. This 56 minute observational documentary follows the revival of a traditional nitiation ritual not practiced in over 30 years in Makira province, Solomon Islands.

Ils ont atteint le point de non-retour. Bruno, Jean-François, David et les autres ont quitté la France, il y a longtemps. Ils ont succombé au mythe des pays lointains. Il leur a fallu déchanter : trouvant difficilement un emploi, ils vivent de la débrouille, marginalisés, déracinés, en rupture avec la société. Avec leurs rêves et des chimères, avec l’alcool ou la drogue. Certains sont à la dérive, d’autres assument un choix de vie en osmose avec une nature sauvage et aimée, d’autres se persuadent que tout est encore possible et acceptent une réalité peu reluisante.
Bruno, Jean-François, David and the others left France a long time ago and have now reached the point of no return. They have succumbed to the myth of distant countries. They became disillusioned: tough finding work, they are resourceful, marginalised, uprooted and at odds with society with their dreams and flights of fancy, alcohol and drugs. Some are adrift, others commit themselves to a lifestyle in symbiosis with an untouched and loved wilderness, others are convinced that anything is still possible and accept a dismal reality.

Elle a mené de brillantes études en Australie et Nouvelle Zélande. Revenue au pays, elle est la jeune mère de 2 enfants, a repris l’exploitation familiale de cacao avec son mari et s’occupe d’une ONG. Voulant apporter sa force et sa détermination pour aider son pays, elle se lance en politique en 2012.
Markham Valley, Papua New Guinea. Jenifer Baing Waiko is from the Aztera clan, the daughter of a leader and former political figure and a mother of New Zealand origin. She was a brilliant student in Australia and New Zealand. Back home, she is the young mother of two children, has taken on the family cocoa farm with her husband and takes care of an NGO. She got into politics in 2012, aiming to provide her strength and determination to help her country.

L’île de Pâques est colonisée par le Chili en 1888. Le Chili a loué les terres de l’île à une entreprise d’élevage extensif de moutons et confié la surveillance des Rapanui aux militaires qui enferment les habitants dans un village, devenu camp de détention. Prisonniers dans leur île, les Rapanui résistent contre l’oppression, allant jusqu’à s’enfuir sur des barques vers Tahiti.
Easter Island was colonised by Chile in 1888. Chile rented the land on the island to a company for extensive sheep rearing and entrusted monitoring the Rapanui to the military who imprison the inhabitants in a village, turned detention camp. Prisoners on their own island, the Rapanui resist oppression, going as far as to escape on boats to Tahiti.

Madison Stewart is an Australian who has dived on the Great Barrier Reef and has been passionate about sharks from a very young age. But nowadays fishing has made it into an endangered population. Madison films them and fights to rehabilitate them, raise awareness of their purpose as well as the dangers involved in consuming their flesh. Will she succeed in making herself heard ?

Sovereignty Dreaming, la révolte des Rêves

Le chemin du rêve peut-il conduire les Aborigènes vers la souveraineté de leurs terres ? Sur une terre partagée entre 5 clans a été prise la décision de créer un centre d’enfouissement de déchets nucléaires. Les dirigeants du projet ont contacté certains propriétaires traditionnels, mais pas tous. Un groupe de femmes décide de s’opposer au projet et de se battre contre l’enfouissement de ces déchets qui souillerait le passage des chemins du rêve et profanerait des sites sacrés.
Can the path of dreams lead Aborigines towards sovereignty over their land? In a land shared between 5 clans the decision has been made to create a landfill site for nuclear waste. The project managers have contacted some traditional landowners, but not everyone. A group of women decide to oppose the project and to fight against the disposal of this waste that will sully the passage of the path of dreams and will desecrate sacred sites.

En Polynésie française, les belles images du tatouage et son histoire. Ce marquage social polynésien, autrefois essentiel, a longtemps été interdit par les Missionnaires. Puis l’ interdit, intériorisé par la population, a quasi effacé la mémoire de cet art, devenu presque clandestin. A la fin des années 1970, grâce à Tavana Salmon, à l’occasion du « renouveau culturel » et des recherches identitaires, il est réapparu, s’inspirant des motifs marquisiens préservés. Aujourd’hui il triomphe dans la société polynésienne et s’exporte.
A history of beautiful tattoo designs in French Polynesia. Missionaries have long banned this once essential Polynesian social marking. Then the interdiction, internalised by the population, virtually deleted the memory of this now pretty much clandestine art. Thanks to Tavana Salmon, as part of the ‘cultural revival’ seeking identity at the end of the 1970s, it reappeared, inspired by preserved Marquesan patterns. Today it prevails in Polynesian society as well as being marketable outside.

Après une exposition sur la culture maori, le directeur du musée de Leyde (Pays Bas) a l’idée de faire rentrer dans les collections du musée une pirogue maori. Ce projet est monté avec le souci de faire vivre une relation forte entre les Maori et les Hollandais, mais aussi pour offrir une part du « mana », du «waka » à l’équipage hollandais. Il nous amène de la construction de la pirogue jusqu’à la cérémonie du don.
Following an exhibition about Maori culture, the director of the Leyde Museum (Netherlands) has the idea of introducing a Maori dugout canoe to the museum collections. This project is organised to reinforce a strong relationship between the Maoris and the Dutch, but also to offer part of the ‘mana’ of the ‘waka’ to the Dutch team. It takes us from the construction of the dugout to the donation ceremony.

A metallurgical industrial centre in Australia, near the coast. For various financial, ecological or spiritual reasons, a joyful and festive community contemplate creating a public funeral service when its members are suddenly confronted with the fatal illness of a founder member of the group.
